Build & Race: Grass Kart!

Kickstart Your Automotive or Engineering Career with the Grass Kart Challenge!

The Grass Kart Challenge aims to increase participation in engineering/technical subjects and careers via a secondary schools based Grass Kart design and build challenge.

The Grass Kart Challenge is an exciting competition designed to spark interest in engineering and automotive careers. Participants are tasked with building a kart from the ground up, applying their knowledge of design, mechanics, and teamwork. Once their karts are complete, they compete against other student-built karts in a thrilling race. The event also offers participants the opportunity to earn credits.

Key Takeaway

A great team is organized, communicative, and efficient. Follow these tips, and you'll be set for success!

🗓️

Plan Carefully

Central Southland College

PLAN your design carefully. Make sure you can do all the things you plan or you’ll spend too much time working out how to do things rather than just getting on and doing them. Use a timeline.

🔧

Stay Organized

Fiordland College

Be more organised, plan better and make sure every person has a job to do every period. Also go hard out at the start and don’t leave anything to the last minute to get things organised

📝

Paperwork

Twizel Area School

Don’t leave your paperwork till the end of the year. Keep our power point up to date so we don’t have to rush round the day before its due.

💪

Know Your Team

Roxburgh Area School

Know your teams’ strengths and use them.

💬

Communicate

Hokonui Tertiary High School

Discuss things with our team before we do them, so we have less stuff ups.

🤝

Work as a Team

John McGlashan College

Be a team.

📐

Measure Twice

Lincoln High School

Measure twice cut once so we don’t waste materials and valuable time!

⏱️

Allow Extra Time

Aparima College

Allow a couple of weeks to get things organised.

Use Time Wisely

Mountainview High School

Spend your time wisely, you may think you have a lot of time but really you don’t.

Things we would do differently

We focus on planning, teamwork, clear task distribution, and early preparation to work efficiently and achieve our goals.

Planning and Organization

Have a formal plan to go off because it makes life easier and causes less arguments than just imagining what the final product will look like

Task Distribution and Clarity

We would plan the kart better at the start so that we know what we are doing every period. Also, we would make sure every team member has something to do.

Teamwork and Communication

Our team had some co-operation issues and if we were to re-do this we would have a lot better communication going on so more people had jobs to do instead of sitting around watching others.”

Preparation and Practice

We would get our Kart ready 2 – 3 weeks earlier so that we can practice with it at school.

Would you recommend?

Would you recommend doing the Grass Kart project to other students?

"Yes, we would. Because we have learned so much about building grass karts and the engineering that is involved with them, and it gave us the skills for the engineering trade."
"We have leant skills that will last us a lifetime and will be useful in any career path that we chose to proceed in. For example, we can now negotiate through our problems and engineer items to serve a specific purpose."
"Absolutely. We learned how to work as a team and make group decisions. It was awesome fun!"
"We have learned so many life skills that will help us when we leave school and (hopefully) become apprentices."
"Working on the grass kart helped some of us decide that we want to work in engineering."
"It was awesome fun!"
