From the 29th of March 2007 till the 13th of October 2007 nineteen schools in the Southland and Otago regions participated in the Grass Kart Challenge.
The competitors were supplied with Grass Kart Kitsets (valued around $2000 each) by the Southern Institute of Technology and the Otago Polytechnic.
The aim of the contest was to foster appreciation for and enthusiasm towards careers in the field of mechanical engineering.
To this end the participating schools were encouraged to link the challenge process to any relevant unit and achievement standards or credits.
The competition judging was held Saturday 13 October at the Forbury Park Raceway. The competitors were judged on many different criteria, from performance to record keeping.
